Intended for unincorporated areas, the purpose
of the program is to foster stewardship and maintenance of significant
heritage trees for the preservation and enjoyment of future generations. Trees
are nominated only at the consent of property owners and there
are no regulatory restrictions associated with this designation.
The Historic Review Board and a certified arborist review nominations
annually; new Heritage Trees are recognized with a plaque and ceremony
during National Historic Preservation Month in May.
Eugene Legacy Tree Program

The Legacy Tree Program is conducted in partnership
with the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division. A Legacy Tree is
a tree of great size, age, historical significance or rarity. It
can be on private or public property, but must be accessible for
viewing by the public and be within city limits. Anyone may
nominate a tree and nominations are reviewed periodically by committee. Each
Legacy Tree is identified by a small plaque. The program
is entirely voluntary, requiring written permission of the owner. Legacy
Tree status does not restrict the owner’s use or maintenance
of the tree or surrounding property.
Forest Grove Significant Tree Program

Forest Grove has had a significant tree program
since 1992 and includes 212 trees on 92 parcels. The program is established
by the City’s Zoning Ordinance as part of a broader Tree
Protection Ordinance which recognizes that the trees of Forest
Grove offer historic, aesthetic, spiritual, social, environmental,
and monetary values to the community. To ensure success of
the urban forestry program, the tree management ordinance establishes
governing guidelines, a legal framework, and authority for the
community forestry program. This ordinance seeks to enhance
the quality of life in Forest Grove by promoting good stewardship
that will ensure the continued health and well-being of the community
forest. The ordinance creates a protected status for Street
Trees, Natural Resource Vegetation, Trees on Developable Land,
Trees on Approved Site Plans, and Register Trees.

The Tree Preservation committee is a seven-member citizen advisory
committee appointed by the Gresham City Council. The Committee
advises City Council and staff about tree preservation, recommends
tree species for the City's street tree list and specific trees
for designation as significant trees. Members usually have expertise
associated with trees such as forestry, landscaping or extensive
knowledge gained through experience.
Lake Oswego Heritage Tree Program

This program was developed by the Tigard Tree
Board as a method to identify and raise public awareness of rare/exceptional
trees due to their age, size, species, horticultural quality
or historical importance. All nominations are reviewed by the
Tigard City Arborist, the Tree Board, and ultimately the City
Council. This voluntary
program offers incentives to private landowners who have a heritage
tree growing on their property.
Tualatin Heritage Tree Program

Nominations are judged by the Tualatin Parks
Advisory Committee and a recommendation is forwarded to the City
Council for final determination. Upon City Council approval, the property owner
is required to sign a Heritage Tree Designation and Preservation
Agreement. The Heritage Tree Program is used to facilitate
the protection and planting of trees. Each year, up to five
trees chosen based on their size, quality, species or historic
value are selected for Heritage Tree status, and are added to Tualatin's
list of Heritage Trees. A map of these trees is available
from the Community Services Department.
West Linn Heritage Tree Program

Heritage trees are designated by the City Council
following review of a nomination form submitted by a citizen
and accepted, in writing, by the property owner. The written consent includes provisions
for the City to have reasonable access to the tree for maintenance,
and with designation is an encumbrance on the property with a listed
deed restriction. With designation a heritage tree plaque
is placed upon or near the tree.
Wilsonville Heritage Tree Program

This program is totally voluntary and carries
no regulatory component. Any
person may nominate a tree using a form obtained from the city. If
the tree is on private property it should be clearly visible from
the public way and the nomination must have the owner’s written
consent. Nominations are reviewed by a Heritage Tree Committee
and recommended for approval to the City Council. City planning
staff maintain an inventory of the trees and provide a small plaque
to be posted near the tree in public view.

The Yamhill County Historical Society Heritage
Tree Program solicits tree nominations and then keeps an inventory
of those trees accepted into the program. The inventory
consists of 23 trees and includes 3 Oregon Heritage Trees: the
Ewing Young Oak, the Baker/Russell Black Walnut, and the Hoover-Minthorn
Pear.
